Investment Portfolio Knowledge Base
Investment Portfolio? I'm doing a project for an AP economics class that has to do with creating a financial investment portfolio that may include stocks, mutual funds, corporate bonds, government securities, certificates of deposits and money market accounts. I've assessed the risk for each of the following and have a general idea of what might need to be done, but does anyone else have input for these clients? 1) Client A has $25,000 to invest over a 10 year period. She wants to make money to pay for tuition when her children begin college. Her two children have just started school. She wants to find investments that will generate returns greater than the money market 2) Client B is 15 years old and has been given a gift of $10,000 to start an investment account to build toward the future. 3) Client C has $100,000 and is 50 years old and wants to retire at age 65. He is a teacher in New York State. Any input on any or all of the above would be really really appreciated! Thanks in advance!
How do I start building an investment portfolio? I'm brand new to investing and I've been reading some of the articles on Investopedia, but I could use a little more guidance. What is the best way to begin putting together an investment portfolio? Should I just start buying stocks or should I immediately think about diversification and mix it up a bit? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I'd be really happy if you could link to some further reading. Thanks!
How do you think this will affect an investment portfolio? Suppose that you have a client whose investment portfolio you have been managing for the past five years. Suppose further that this client believes that the equity market will increase this year and wants to re-allocate his fixed-income investments to the equity allocation. If you decrease his bond allocation and increase his stock allocation, how will this affect the expected return and the standard deviation of the portfolio?

Can you suggest a good, reputable online discount broker to handle the transactions?
Investment Portfolio Recommendations for a 26 year old? I'm 26 years old and just started working on building my portfolio. I'm planning on maxing out my Roth IRA contribution for 2006 and am going to contribute 10-15% of my 2007 paycheck towards my employers 401k plan. For the Roth IRA I'm thinking about investing in NAESX. Is this a good idea or are there others that you would recommend? More importantly, how should I allocate my 401k? Are there specific mutual funds that you would recommend? I want to be pretty aggressive since I probably won't be touching the money for over 30 years but I also want to make sure I stay diversified.
Interest Rates and Investment Portfolio? I am going to a job interview tomorrow for MetLife, one of the leading insurance companies. After reading some news clips, their CEO recently said something to the effect of "lower interest rates are going to negatively impact the performance of our investment portfolio by up to $125 million in 2009." Please explain how this works.
Should one build mutual fund investment portfolio based on return only? Is there anything wrong with the idea of investing in those mutual funds which have given highest return in say last 3/5 years? I do not understand why people worry about selecting diversified equity fund or debt fund; about large cap or mid cap fund. After all what matters is the return, so one should select those funds which have proven track records of better returns than others and select those with maximum returns. Is this idea wrong?
Should I divide my portfolio up and put the parts in different investment firms or banks? I have a portfolio at a big investment firm. The portfolio itself is pretty diversified. So all my eggs are not in one basket. However, is not having the entire portfolio at one investment firm or Bank kind of like having all your eggs in one basket? What if this bank goes down? It's a very well known and reputable investment firm but so was Arthur Anderson and they went down.
Which is the best website to monitor investment portfolio.? I currently use money.cnn.com and finance.yahoo.com. Both are inherently plagued with problems. money.cnn.com is affected with server down problem quite a lot, while Y! finance, like so many other sites allows only long positions and I have quite a lot of shorts in my portfolio. Any suggestions for a website with nice layout and which allows shorts will be highly appreciated. Any additional features to represent options etc would be great though not required.

How can my schools investment club develop a portfolio? My school has an investment club were we learn and discuss about stocks and other securities. I believe we should take some action and develop a way to pool donated money together and invest it all under one portfolio the club would manage and then what ever money we gain on our investment can be turned into a scholarship for our school. If donated money was all invested and managed by students what is this actually called. Would we be making somewhat of a mutual fund? or Would our President be the head of managing the pooled money? What exactly am I trying to do?
mortgage refinancing to increase my investment portfolio? I am in mid twenties and have a house that is fully paid up. The rental income is around 5%/annum. I read a few articles about stocks, and as we all know, this is the best time to invest in stocks. As the return is always higher for stock and they are cheap nowadays. Should I sell my house and go for it? Or refinance the house? Or stay the same?? And of course, I am still optimistic about the stocks in long term. Please advise.

Have you talked with your investment adviser about your stock portfolio lately? Good things come in small packages the cliché sings out, a self-important chip on its nonexistent shoulder Yes, the banker says, just keep that in mind; he hands me my portfolio walks out of the room and forgets my name I consider for a moment but just a moment, for he as much as told me what to do I lower my pants and leave a “small package” of my own on my favourite ex-banker’s chair. Good things, good thins indeed.
