What is the minimum investment required to build a decent share portfolio? I received a bonus from work and have £3000 available to invest. Rather than just putting it into a cash ISA I am considering opening an online sharedealing account and investing in shares. However, even the cheapest online brokers charge a flat fee of around £8-10 per trade. I don't mind a moderate degree of risk, but I get the feeling that after trading fees are deducted I will struggle to beat the performance of a tracker fund or even a normal savings account even if I make good stock selections (and this is by no means guaranteed!) Is there a general rule of thumb for the mimimum amount of money that a private investor should have before they consider investing directly in the stock market? Should I just stick with a cash savings account, or possibly tracker / mutual funds?

Create your own Foreign Stock Share portfolio?? Would it br profitable to buy stock shares from foreign stock exchanges short term? NOT REFERING TO ADRs! NO ETFs! LETS SIDESTEP CURRENCY FLUCTUATIONS! I mean like the London stock exchange, the Frankfurt stock exchange, the Mexican, and Russian stock exchanges, others. If you look at the various exchange websites some of the stocks on them have very high returns, even higher than USA stocks. Why not put together a portfolio of each of the HIGHEST returning stocks -one from each exchange based on INTRADAY and WEEKLY returns? Why would this not work? Would it cost too much?
Yr 11 economics HELP. 'Planning a share portfolio'. Good Q. for stock brokers. Any help appreciated? Hi there For our yr 11 econ's assignment we have to create a share market portfolio and then apply this to a fake client. I am not asking for anyone to do this for me and i am not expecting that, but i was wondering if someone could provide me with some information like about shares and investments and debentures etc. Could you please also try and explain what is the best way of investment, for example who should aim for protection of savings, aim for high income etc. like what would make best overall returns. some examples of fake clients are: 1. A sixteen year old high school student has inherited $80,000 from their grandparent's estate. 2. A father of four who has just won $100,000 in the lottery. 3. a retiree is living off their superannuation fund. So overall could someone include info on how to set up a share portfolio, what needs to be included, discussion of an investment stratergy. Thankyou and your answers are very much aprreciated.

No error code given. The problem occurs with Yahoo finance when I try to access my major share portfolio.? My account contains 5 portfolios. The 3 smallest contain less than 10 lines and never give the error message. The next is my watch list and it varies between 10-20 lines; usually this is OK but lately it has been difficult. My main portfolio contains 94 shares and it has become increasingly difficult to access over the last 2 weeks. Usually if I try to enter through a different route I can open the page but for the last couple of days I can sometimes open it once but lose it when I seek information about a single share. Then I can't get back in and usually have to shut down then start again.
Israel's Chief of Staff sells Share portfolio just before Lebanese attack, SURPRISED? Once again these corrupt people are demonstrating that their financial gain is more important than lives. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4797471.stm Walter Ridgeley, Look through YA, and you will find that whenever the truth comes about Israel and the Jews, the propagandists tend to hang their heads in shame. I just LOVE it.

Does anyone know of any potential sites I could use? I'm trying to find a website that allows you to build a stock portfolio and then share it/allow it to be viewed by others through a link or something similar but cannot find anything. Does anyone know of any potential sites I could use? (Also these are not necessarily actual holding but potentially just stocks you're tracking like on Yahoo Finance or something)

How do you recognize a loss on a Yahoo portfolio? For example, I sold shares of a stock at a loss and used the money to repurchase shares of another stock. I have removed the old stock from the portfolio added the new stock (with purchase price and # of shares) to the portfolio, but now a total gain/loss does not reflect the loss of the sold stock. I am almost certain I am doing something stupid here. Hmm, but if I simply changed that stock to 0 shares, it also removes it from the gain/loss calculation.
What does the value of a portfolio include? This question may sound simple, but I want to make sure that I understand the concept of portfolio value. I think that portfolio value contains the number of share times the price of share, the number of shares times the price of long call. But the number of shares times the price of short call is subtracted from the portfolio value. Also, I'm not sure about put options. I think that the number of shares times the price of short put is added to the portfolio value, but the number of shares times the price of long put is subtracted from the portfolio value.
What is a reasonable price to charge for a model portfolio shoot? I will be photographing someone for the purpose of starting in modeling portfolio for him. I've done my share of photography, but never for something like this. Essentially, all he needs is one good face shot, and one whole body shot. I anticipate on taking a couple dozen shots overall and possibly having more for him than the basic two he needs. What would be a reasonable price to charge for this?
How do I compare a portfolio of stocks to the market index? How do I compare a portfolio of stock and the market index? I need to compare a portfolio of 20 stocks to S&P 500, FTSE 100 etc. for a specific event window (2 day Average). I have calculated the percentage gains (losses) in the value of share prices for each of the 20 companies in the portfolio and also for associated index. The Null Hypothesis is that there is no difference in the precentage gains (losses) between the stock price and index movements. How do I statistically test this?
Is Share Builders "Build an ETF portfolio" a great investment? When I did started it I went through the questions and it classified me as balanced. I put $350 a month and they gave me four ETFs: AGG=$88, IEF=$66, IWD=$112, IWF= $84. As you see SB divided my $350 a month into these four ETFs. Is this a great investment? What do you think? What is your opinion?
What are the different methods for calculating actual and excess portfolio returns? I understand that you can calculate actual returns using the change in share price or market capitalisation in a given period. Is there any other ways that I'm not aware of? Same for excess returns, I 've figured that you can subtract the risk-free rate and also the portfolio average return or a benchmark index average return to eliminate returns due to systematic and specific risk. Is there other methods of calculating the excess returns? This is for an assignment.
How would you rate my stock portfolio? I recently started my portfolio a few months ago. My assets include 105 shares of GE, 100 shares of AIB (allied irish bank), 65 shares of MO (altria), and 50 shares of NRG. Please rate my portfolio thanks.
The new style BT Yahoo Home page has raised my share value by 100 times!? My share portfolios have numbers and values that are correctly totalled on the Yahoo Finance Page/My Portfolios. On the new style page, they are shown as 100 times higher than the correct figure, although they were correct before the new page appeared. Can anything be done to put this right?
Where can I go online to upload my portfolio to be printed, bound and shipped back to me? I recently graduated from university with an architectural design degree. Now I need to compile a portfolio. I want to find a dynamic printing company to take my portfolio in the form of a .pdf file uploaded to their website; for them to then print, bind and ship the finished portfolio back to me for me to take to the interview. Whose done this and will share their experience with a newbie to the architecture design field?
Matching a stock portfolio to mutual fund holdings database? I know I have seen this tool, but I was stupid enough not to bookmark the site. The idea is that you give the program a list of stocks you are interested in, and it looks through the mutual fund holdings database to show funds investing in these stocks, and ranked by performance and share of stocks of interest in the fund portfolio. Help me find this tool again!!
When managed by a competent portfolio manager, what is the average rate of returns? If I begin investing, what is the average rate of returns will I get if I hire a competent portfolio manager to manage my investment? I've heard, long ago, that the average return on investment is around 12%. Is this true? I am a bit confuse because when I look at bankrate.com, the average CD only give out 4.5% for a five year bond. I know stocks are different from CDs but can the difference be that much wide? Anyways, if you do some investing or manage money, how much is the average return when you invest with an 'average risk'? I'm new to all this so please share your insight.
