I am making my portfolio for game/web design? I am wondering what I should put in it. I want to be a game programmer, so I am going to include my best C++ coding and I also might become a web designer before that. What kind of things would help me stand out- knowing how to use more programs? Like I know how to model should I put that in there or just get right to the point. Should web design and programming be seperate portfolios or should I show that I can do more than just that one skill Thanks for helping me improve my future and achieve my goals. Peace Good idea, thanks
What does a video game designer's portfolio actually look like? I was reading this article on how to become a video game designer and the industry, and it said that when applying for a job they have to show a portfolio, but i dont know what it would look like, and consist off, and is it made from scratch? Also I know that you have different types of designer's so I was wondering about level designer's and people who come up with the general idea for the game, e.t.c. I was wondering about both, so pease answers both if you can, if not one is just fine, thanks. P.S. dont mix this up with a resume, lol
What is good to have in a portfolio for a video game company? Right now I'm hoping to get a job as a level designer/scripter for a video game company. What are some things you guys recommend to have in a portfolio? I have some ideas for projects to work on, let me know what would be useful or not. 1) Several custom levels for both single and multiplayer, made using Unreal Editor 3, for various games (Gears of War, Unreal Tournament, etc) 2) Custom RPG game made in C# and SQL. I hope to also be able to write a custom level editor, complete with its own script writer (for scripted events). I hope to be able to use this to publish my own custom game, as well as make the design tools free for download. 3) Custom website(s) Please also let me know of anything else that looks good in a portfolio. Thanks!
What is the best online college for video game design? I am considering either The Art Institute Online or Westwood College Online. I really want to be able to get into the industry so that I can one day get a team together to make my own massive multiplayer RPG. I have some really great ideas that haven't been thought of, and I just want to get my foot in the door. I figure getting a degree will get me a portfolio that I can take to a company and get hired on a game design team for whatever. Maybe that will get my foot in the door? Has anyone here taken gotten a good job through one of these online game design courses? I really need online courses so that I can work while I go to school.
What's the easiest way to hire an artist / illustrator to make game graphics? I've been looking for folks who could do gorgeous pixel art / anime style art for casual game projects. I don't have enough work to hire anyone full time, so is there some website etc. where I could see people's portfolios and easily assign them tasks, charged on a hourly / per picture basis? I tried elance.com, but while it has the portfolio feature, most people there seem to be web designers and not really the type of artists I'm looking for.
(Pics) Could I put screenshots of a level I made for a video game in an art portfolio for college? I think it would be something unique. I made a CounterStrike: Source map a while ago, and I could take screenshots of the map both in-game and in the editor. I'll find out by contacting schools later but I just want opinions first. If it turns out that this will be acceptable I'll improve the map, and make it look nicer, but here are some pics of it: http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd21/stexen17/mymapz2.jpg http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd21/stexen17/mymapz.jpg The shots were not taken to make the map look good, more to give an idea of its structure. I could take better looking ones. Some parts of the map are (in my opinion) pretty "artistic." Uhh.. I designed and created the level.
How do you make a portfolio for a high school football player to send to colleges along with his tapes? I have been told it is better to send pictures, letters from coaches, character references, etc. in portfolio fashion along with his tapes from games. I have also been told it is almost like having to do a resume for a job. Even though he is an excellent player, to have colleges come to our small town to see him play will take getting their interest in him, hence the portfolio. I did not know if I need to find some type of sports promoter who would know what to do? Any help would be appreciated. Also, cost would be a factor. We are just regular people with regular jobs, we cannot afford a lot of expense.
So, how do I get started writing for a video game or comic industry publication? I ask because I'm very interested in writing for a magazine in one of those areas. I've got a degree in technical writing, but I'm not sure what comics/gaming magazines might look for in an applicant--I' What sort of experience should I have? What should my portfolio contain? I'm going to be real crazy here and assume that they would want articles about games or comics, but is there something else? I figured I'd just throw this question out there and see if anyone had any helpful advice. Thanks!
What's a good programming language if I want to be an independent game programmer? I was thinking maybe C++. I enjoy using Excel VBA for managing my stock portfolio. I've seen 'Free to try' games on downloads.com, then if you like the demo you can buy the game online via credit card. I've seen some crappy games that I know I could do better, and maybe for $5 to a global market I might do well. I'm thinking of dedicating 10 years+ to this. I love working independently.
Does anyone knows who won CNBC Portfolio Challenge ? I was up 68% In the last week my portfolio rose 49% in that single week. I don't know if I won something. CNBC has not displayed any ranking position on players from one week before the game ended. They have not posted any messages in relation either. Does anyone knows something?
What kind of of computer can handle game/simulation design? I'll be starting an online college soon that teaches game, simulation & AI programing, design & production. My current computer can't handle that kind of media & I need one that can. I'd like the computer to be able to run the programs I'll be taught to use to create my own little games here & there just for my own benefit (& my portfolios). But I want to also be able to run a few games that I enjoy playing (like the sims/sims2, tycoon games & civ games. I'm not real keen on the idea of having Vista or a Dell, I've had really bad luck with dells. But I'm not sure whether to go with a desktop (which brand's pkg?, or build by...?) & it's ease to upgrade, or a laptop (which brands pkg?) it's versitile & usable anywhere I want it (I'm disabled - sometimes go back to bed for heating pads on my back & joints). I'd appreciate thoughts & suggestions, we are on a budget so please keep that in mind. Thanks! I wanted to mention I've considered an Apple, but all my games are PC and I don't know that they'll work on an Apple computer - I can't afford to rebuy my games and programs on Apple so unless they will work on a Mac, I need to stick with a PC. Thanks!
Where to start for learning game design? Having self-taught myself about html, c, c++, and basic graphic design, I'm looking to stretch my wings farther. I've got experience doing quite a few websites for friends and local organizations. I've designed and built two mud games (one from the ground up using SocketMud - barebones code). I'm hoping to learn more about 3d graphics and visual game design. I can't afford to go back to school for another year or two. In the mean time, if I could get a little self-taught learning in and maybe even build up a portfolio it would help. Any advice on what programs I should download or websites I can read up about game design, graphical game programming ect? (Should mention for those that don't know, MUDs are text-based games that require quite a bit of coding to create).
How to start a portfolio? I want to become a game modeler or a programmer and I don't know how to start of the Portfolio, can someone please help me?
Is there any Game Programming relevant degree in graduate school? According to my following situation and consideration, could you give me a direction to apply for that degree of graduate school in American such as a school website link, summary, suggestion or experience about how to prepare better? >>I have had the experience in game company as a programmer for up to 4 years. >>There are some game projects I have completed and launched in Asia market. Is anyone else on this site also playing the wallstreetsurvivor.com game? Its a great way to learn how to play the stock markets, they start you off with a free $100K portfolio and with this play money you learn how to buy and sell actual stocks. And, the best part about learning something new is at the end of the game, sometime in August 2008, those with the highest profits can win great prizes, cash (real money) and real vacations to mexico. is anyone else playing this interesting game? Thank you, Clem
Game design schooling question? Is it better to go to specialized game design school, a normal college and get a degree specialized in computers, or should I stay home and work privately and practice game design skills at my own house while building a portfolio?

How do you break into the gaming industry? I've finished college for 3d animation and haven't been able to break into the game industry yet. I've sent out 50 portfolio packages and gotten back atleast half that in postcards and e-mails. I've also been to GDC and Siggraph. I haven't even been able to get a regular art job. What gives? Writing a Graphical Game C++? I can write text based games...Oh hell yes can I write the hell out of text based games. I would really like to (eventually) get into writing graphical games...I am working on my BS Computer Science, and I figure the best addition to my portfolio for any future employer would be a graphical game or two. Trouble is, every tutorial I find is for a simple guessing game (text based), or just provides very abstract guidelines. Could someone tell me a good route to take in getting started in writing games? Thanks!
What's the best way to get jobs online as a freelance web designer? Other than word of mouth, contests, or bidding. I've been doing websites for gaming servers for a while now and I want to build my portfolio more with just gaming websites. I know of the contest sites but I'm not very supportive of them. I've tried the bidding sites as well and although it's successful I'd rather prefer being almost guaranteed a customer instead of hoping I get one. Anything helps, thanks!
game developer with no college? So im 17 years old and in my junior year of highschool. lately ive been looking into becoming a game programmer or more likely a game artist. and yes ive done my homework i know what the difference is. ive taken a few high school courses on 3d modeling and done real well and have been messing around slowly but surely teaching myself C++. My question is, is it realistic to be able to get hired to a decent paying job in this field straight out of high school assuming your really good at what you do with a good portfolio? or does pretty much every game developing company require a degree of some sort?

What would you rather be doing right now other than Y!A? I'd rather be sleeping, which I'll probably be doing in less than an hour or two. Some reason, I've been feeling really tired these past few days. I just really, need to step up my game and finish my portfolio for graduation. Ahh! Sleep, here I come, sleep. I WAS waiting for someone to get on... But I forgot that he had something to do this weekend. - Thanks in advance. Daoie! Loves Bananas, But Not You.

What should I put in a 3d Modeling portfolio? I am a student going to school for game design and am trying to put together a portfolio for 3d modeling. I am not quite sure what I should include, if I should go high or low poly, and how important texture work is. I am already modeling a small personal yacht, and a windmill. I want to be an environment modeler and I don't have a class on portfolios for another 3 months and I would like to get a head start. I'm thinking weapons, buildings and vehicles would be a good route to take but I'm not certain on exactly what to model. Any advice on how to make a good portfolio?

What makes a good graphic design portfolio? I have been furious for a while now because I want to make my portfolio more then average. So far, I have design a magazine ad, three poster, three gift cards and a stationary design that are theme to children and family. I want to add five more projects in my portfolio but then I some problems. I was thinking of designing two animation, one flash game and two websites theme to family and children. How can I show my websites, flash game and animation if I can't print them for my portfolio? Should I put them in a blank CD and my graphic projects in the portfolio? If there is anyone who is a graphic designer, please send in your opinions. Thanks.
What do I need to study to become a game designer? I already have a 2 years bachelors degree in Computer Programming. I'm an honours student. I would like to have game designer specific education, because I already have a solid programming base. I havn't done DirectX programming, so I'll need to study that also. I already have experience programming and selling games, so I already have some material for my portfolio. I'm considering jumping right into the gaming industry, but I'd like to have some consultation first. My question is: Do I have enough education/experience to jump into the industry, and eventually become a game designer? ...or if you think I need additional education... Can you refer me to a good ONLINE game design program. Money isn't an issue, so none of those crappy free online courses.
How to begin as a Concept Artist - Game Design? First of all hello to community. I am now finishing and getting my grade in "Art Science" (both FULL theoritical and practical courses) from a european public and well known university. But my interest was always in concept art (game art mainly) and all these 4 years till my final grade i was sketching/practising alone with concept art because my university doesn't have a related course (only general fine art courses not digital drawing). The last 2 years i entered the graphic tablet field and i am drawing almost everyday through forums (conceptart.org for example) etc. But what i am really wondering is what to do next... I mean, can i send a portfolio (it is kinda weak-medium so far) to game design corporations or should i have to enter a digital art school-college in USA for example , in order to increase my level? If yes, can someone guide me to this dream-hunting quest? Any scholarship-tips available or anything? . Thank you and have a pleasant day :)
How do I do this in Director? Okay, my computer teacher wants us to each make an interactive, innovative digital portfolio of all of the projects we have made in his digital media class. I am doing mine in the form of an old school text adventure game. However, I have not used Director in some time, and I forget how to do some things. I want to make it so that If I press the letter 'Y' it goes to 'Marker01' and if I press 'N' the .exe exits. Would anybody help me with this?

How can I start my freelancing career? I have no previous work. I have just started my pursuit to a freelancing writing business and I will need some sort of content in my portfolio. I'm looking for anything, preferably something that has to do video games because that is my area of expertise. But I'm willing to write about anything small. Are there any magazines asking for freelancers to write for them or small business? Who ever gives me advice that gets me an assignment gets best answer. (just for fun)
What's a great name for the action baseball photography business I just started? I'll be specializing in outdoor, action baseball photography only (images like Sports Illustrated, the best you can get). My market will be primarily middle/high school and college, minor leagues if I can crack that market. I'll be creating custom portfolios for individual players at first, but am open to photographing all players in the game and selling individual shots to them if requested.
Trying to create a portfolio? What are some games that are decently complex to design, program, and implement that don't require a lot of knowledge in advanced mathematics?
i need to expand my portfolio! any ideas of what to draw? alright, so in ap art studio, we need to enter 12 pieces that are focussed on a style and subject of our choice, and another 12 pieces that are a variety of different styles to show our wide range. right now im working on the breath section (the variety one) and i was wondering if anyone has ideas.. ive zoomed in on composition with oil paints, ive done a reflection/perspective piece with prisma color, ive done still life with pencil, and ive done a picture using lines and cross hatching for the shading.. i was thinking of using oil pastels or acrillic for maybe a landscape.. and i want to include some people.. but for my focussed section of my portfolio, im doing people so i dont need to focus too much on that anyways, i need a lot more pieces lol so if you have any ideas, that would be great they just need to be 2-d and less than a quarter inch thick.. everything else is fair game
Game Artists in the game industry - need your advice? This isn't directly aimed to people in the field, but it would really help if someone "inside" can give me a few pointers. I currently attend a school that's a few hundred miles away from the core of game development (California) and I wanted to know how will an aspiring game artist get an entry level position? I've tried some job searches, and contacts from game related jobs and the leads I get ask for Junior or Senior game artists, or have 2-5 year minimum industry experience. I wasn't expected to start out big, but I'm getting the impression that if I were to find entry level I'd have to be a game tester despite having a BA in 3D Art and Design. I've been planning to attend job fairs for game artists but I can never find the time (or the funds) to attend one. Would I be wasting my time going to these? The usual send your demo reel/online portfolio isn't going to be enough, I need to get my face out there but I just need to find a good place to start. Thank you. To the first answer: Thank you. This is good advice, as my school's professors and job service didn't explain the details such as "move first, job seek after." Or start within living distance. I live in Arizona so it's a few hours away from L.A., San Deigo, and San Francisco so it's not too bad. So far all I have done is send resumes and portfolio to companies, as well as maintain contact with a few companies but it's understandable if distance hinders my chances. I'm saving my funds for moving, rather than spending it going to career fairs since California is rather expensive compared to most places. Thank you for your honesty, I'm very aware this industry is competitive as with many artist jobs in other industries. Even if I become a tester it's a start, that is having a foot in the door. Though, would it really be a wise move to move to a new city before you have a job? Technically I would rather drive a few hours and stay overnight at a hotel for an interview nearby than move and strike out for weeks. If I land the position and had to start in a week, then I would gather my belongings, find a place to live and prepare myself for my new career. I'm not limiting myself to just Game Development, but it is very nice to know how the game industry works compared to animation workshops and studios.
game programming/design career advice? Hello answer-ers, I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on a game programming or design career. I'm currently a fourth-year college student, and I am on my second year of my computer science degree. I know that I want to program games, although I dont know how to do that yet, but I'm learning. I'm currently taking C++, I already know some Java and Python. I know C++ is more important, and I'm trying to learn it as fast as possible so that I can start creating a portfolio for myself to showcase any skills. Anyway, my question is: After I graduate from undergrad, would it be better to go to a Masters program for computer science, or should I enroll in a game design school (which I've seen advertised a lot) and finish a few years of that also before moving on? Or better yet, what exactly should one do after undergrad if one wanted to get into the gaming industry? PS I live in western NY, and I know I would have to move if I wanted to work for a game design company. Thanks a lot in advance.
If I make a flash game using a tutorial, does it count as mine? What if all the design is me but programming..? Additional details: I made a flash game using a tutorial and I want to use it for my portfolio for my application for a multimedia degree and I'm curious whether that would count as mine. I did everything apart from the coding. If the guy asks me about it, what do I say? Another friend of mine that's also doing a transfer to multimedia (he's already at the uni I'm applying to) said they asked him to make a flash comic and if he does then he can skip the first flash class. I don't want them to think I'm fluent in flash (I don't know the programming at all) just that I can find my way around the program, and I will learn the code in the flash class there so it's not a problem. So should I add it or not? Everyone liked the game, just will they? It's a simple game like catching fish for points and avoiding sharks where you lose points. Nothing fancy but fairly decent. I know about the credit, that's not the issue, I gave credit for everything including the music I used. I'm just asking will it bother them that the programming wasn't my own?
I just invested virtual money in the Investopedia game? In 5 days i increased the value of my portfolio by 10k (I started with 100k) Anyway i was wondering is this simulator is just too easy or indeed is so easy to make money in the stock market? Is this and other simulators just designed to make people think its easy and so they invest everything in the real one so they lose all their money?
What are the safety rules for monopoly? I'm doing a project for Graphics (GCSE's) and i am analyzing the monopoly board game, so far i have analyzed the Customer, function, size, price, Aesthetics and environment, and now i am stuck on analyzing the safety of the board game and have been for several hours. I have looked everywhere on the net, and can not find anything that will tell me what the safety rules are. If anyone can tell me what they are it would be great as it is a important part of my analysis for my portfolio. Thanks Kitten LOL Thanks guys *huggles* you've been a great help
how can i invest in the actual stock market? i tried to invest in yahoo finance but whenever i buy or sell stocks there, it doesn't even ask me for my credit card number, etc. it seems as if yahoo finance is just another stock market game. is it? because when i invest in stocks using the portfolios in yahoo finance, it doesn't ask for credit card number so it looks like it's not even taking money out or putting money into my actual credit account. how can i really invest in the actual market? or am i doing something wrong here? much help appreicated.

I need help with game design? I'm in grade 10 and I'm in a career studies class. I really want to do game design as my career. But when I check out colleges they all say that you need to show a portfolio and be able to draw. I'm not a great artist so I wanted to know if there is a college out there that you don't need to be able to draw just do the 3d modeling and animations on the computer instead of drawing them first and one more thing I want to know is how do they get their drawings onto the computer? I know they draw their animations on paper but how do they get it on the computer and put it on the program to make the animations??
Am I able to legially put someones copyrighted idea into 3D then put it into my portfolio? I have an animation class this quarter and the final project is to create a 3d character, i asked the teacher if i could do one from a game i i take snap shots of it and recreate it in a higher quality 3d character. He said it would be fine. But I am worried about weather or not i can put that material into my portfolio or even a demo real for when i try to go get a job. I don't want to step on Blizzards toes, and cause a ruckus. But I would very much like to be able to create it more as a fan based thing, and then have it be presented as my skillful quality in my portfolio. Please, I need to make sure if you answer that you are 100% sure of the answer.

I want to be a game designer but....? I'm currently going to New England Tech for game design, and we are learning everything from C++ to 2D programming for our associates I'm really curious if I need to stick around and get my bachelors degree, My primary interest is 3D and I want to do high poly but I can't learn that until the bachelors program .. next year... and another $27k down the road. Do i really need to get a bachelors degree to get a job in this field or should I just take what I learn from the associates and my portfolio and pray for an entry job to work me up to par?
I want to make a documentary about the Cleveland Browns fans? anyone know about licensing? I am a student at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I am very close to finishing up. for my portfolio I would like to do a documentary on the greatest fans in the NFL the Cleveland browns fans. Does anyone know about licensing agreements, or if I could get away with out paying the NFL any kind of money. I do not plan to use any original footage from games at all. Just old fan footage, and footage I would get at Browns Backers Clubs, Tail gating, camp, and Interviews.
Game Design/Art Help ? I'm looking to work on games as a job, i don't know all to much about the field but it seems like some thing I would be good at and have fun with. I have heard Gnomon, Ringling, and Vancouver are the top schools in North America. Any advice on other schools, tips on getting in, where to start, software to start learning, best ways to start your portfolio. Money isn't really a problem, can't pay like 80k+ or any thing crazy like that.
Help me with stock market games? I'm working in a group for the stock market games and We are investing in 6 companies. The person that had the portfolio with all the stock charts lost it so now we have NO charts. I'm helping to replace them but I need help. I know what 6 companies we are investing in but I need to be able to find a site with the daily charts for each company from March 23 to April 13. I can't use weekly charts.

How can I create a video on a PC using images from a PS2 game? I need to create a portfolio for university entry, and part of that portfolio involves making a digital video lasting between 3-5 minutes. I'm intending to create a video using various PS2 racing games, and providing a voiceover with details about the games. The idea is that the games would be played as normal, and to show the gameplay in the video that would be made. But how could I transfer the gameplay on the console to the computer, so that I can make a video out of it? I can only think of using a camcorder to video the TV screen, but it is supposed to look professional, and would prefer to transfer the images direct from the console, rather than hold a video camera up to the screen. Thanks in advance. Thanks for the answers so far, but how can I get the gameplay images from the PS2 to the PC? Is there a way I can put the USB ports on the console to use?
Marketing/business or graphic design degree to persue graphic design? I'm looking into going into graphic design, and I have been told that if I have a degree in business as well I will be one step ahead of the game. Should I take a marketing course instead of a graphic design course? I want to make sure I'm adding things to my portfolio as i'm doing projects for school. Is this a good idea? Or should I stick with a graphic design school and take a semester of business courses?
